Capital One Encourages Young Women to “Get Appy” with STEM Careers during Summer Coders Program
Girls Inc. students present apps during Capital One Coders Program
This summer, Capital One hosted 37 girls from Girls Inc. Dallas during its Capital One Coders Program, an ongoing effort to help students develop a greater interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, also known as STEM. Capital One and Girls Inc. focused on encouraging young women to start thinking about a career in STEM. For the past three weeks, a class of sixth-, seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade Girls Inc. students learned about software engineering and how to develop their own apps using MIT University’s App Inventor.
On Tuesday, June 30, the students met for the last time to put the finishing touches on their projects and prepare presentations. Then, on July 2, they conducted final presentations for parents and teachers and demonstrate the apps they created. The students also celebrated with a sundae party.
The Capital One Coders Program is part of Capital One’s commitment to ensure young men and women have the necessary resources to explore the STEM field, an industry that is expected to grow nearly 17 percent over the next decade. To bridge the STEM education gap, Capital One created the Coders curriculum to help students understand and pursue their interests in STEM fields during a critical period in their education – middle school years.
Girls Inc. Dallas is a program enabling girls to become strong, smart and bold and graduate high school equipped for success. In the past year, Capital One has conducted three coders program series, working with Girls Inc. Dallas
