The Department of Education reports that youth who participate in high-quality after-school programs have “better peer relations and emotional adjustment, and lower incidences of drug use, violence, and pregnancy.” Further, a girl’s future participation in the workforce is directly related to her K-12 academic success. Responding to these critical needs, Girls Inc. encourages girls to continue to learn and grow with us as they move through their school years through a continuum of programs.
Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas® is one of 84 affiliates of the national Girls Incorporated organization, the country’s leading voice for girls. Since 1968, Girls Inc. has responded to the unique needs of girls in underserved communities of Metropolitan Dallas through afterschool and summer programs. Our academic programs in literacy, math and science, health and fitness, pregnancy prevention, leadership, and advocacy are delivered on-site at our four campuses and with outreach programs. This educational programming by a trained staff allows us to best serve the whole girl and is unique among both Dallas Area service organizations and Girls Inc. affiliates, nationwide.
Girls Inc. of Metropolitan Dallas delivers comprehensive afterschool, springbreak and summer programs for girls, ages 6 to 18, from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in Dallas. The Girls Inc. Experience supports the balanced development of the “whole girl” by providing age-appropriate programming delivered in an all-girl environment that helps girls acquire healthy living skills and behaviors; fosters the development of social and emotional well-being; encourages the development of positive relationships with peers and adult role models; advances the role of parents and families in the education and development of their daughters; and builds a girl’s confidence and self-esteem to overcome barriers in her young life.
How does it work?
Girls Inc. programming is built upon a balanced approach to the education and development of girls, ensuring that all aspects of her development (social, emotional, academic and physical) are valued and nurtured. This includes educational enrichment programs and experiences; leadership training and development; learning about arts and culture; helping others and serving the community; building positive relationships with mentors; learning how to make healthy choices about their minds and bodies; resisting risky behaviors; learning how to communicate their thoughts and ideas; understanding the world in which they live; doing well in school at every grade level; and helping their thoughts and dreams about college and career become a reality.
