When you think of STEM, what comes to mind?

SHARE

Did you know that when 2nd graders are asked to draw a scientist, most portray a white male in a lab coat? It’s stereotypes like these that turn girls away from science and math coursework and careers.

Girls deserve and need a supportive, pro-girl environment to explore STEM. They can thrive when they are encouraged to prove to themselves that they can be good at STEM. At Girls Inc. Dallas, girls engage in hands-on STEM activities that allow them to ask questions, explore, and solve problems.

In celebration of every girl who ever thought, “STEM isn’t for me,” this month we’re pleased to highlight just a small sample of the STEM programs that supporters like you make possible for Girls Inc. girls.

Our Spring Break STEM Camp

We’re thrilled to announce our latest STEM opportunity to empower girls to be strong, smart, and bold! Our 2018 Spring Break Camp, Building Up STEAM!, will feature fun, hands-on activities to get girls engaged in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. This year’s camp runs March 12-16 at each of our three locations (South Dallas, Oak Cliff, and Love Field).

Thinking SMART

Girls Inc. Dallas continually partners with talented local STEM professionals to enrich our STEM programs for girls. For example, each summer, 30+ Girls Inc. Dallas girls in grades 7-9 participate in a three-week Capital One Summer Coders Program in Plano, Texas. This program, created in 2014, enables participating girls to earn programming basics, design and create their own apps, and work directly with Capital One’s engineers and designers. Other opportunities blend opportunities for girls to engage directly with STEM professionals with Girls Inc.’s onsite summer camps through career panels and activity workshops.

Eureka! – STEM into High School and Beyond

Eureka! empowers 8th-12th grade girls to see themselves as an important part of the STEM workforce of the future. Girls participate in a variety of compelling activities in subjects that enable them to explore STEM fields like engineering, nanosciences, robotics, and more. Girls can enter the program as early as the summer before their 8th grade year, where they begin EUREKA! through a four-week STEM infusion summer intensive on local university campuses. Following this introduction to EUREKA!, girls advance through middle school and high school as a grade-specific cohort to experience STEM activities and experiences together.
